When most people visualise a carpet it is probably a Saxony they are thinking of. Saxony carpets are the traditional cut-pile carpets that have even cut fibres standing straight up. They have longer fibres than Cut & Loop pile and Berber carpets.
Saxony carpets are made in both straight and textured. A straight Saxony carpet has all fibres going in the same direction giving the impression of a uniform colour. The finish is often pointed out as being similar to velvet as the colour ‘changes’ when the fibres are moved in the opposite direction. A textured (trackless) Saxony carpet has kinked fibres meaning you won’t notice as much difference in colour when the fibres are brushed in different directions.
Saxony carpets have a luxurious and beautiful finish that can add a real sense of warmth to your home. The durability of your Saxony carpet will depend on the type, twist and density of fibres. Straight Saxony carpets work great in more formal areas such as a dining room whereas textured Saxony carpets with a higher density and provide a great solution for ‘high traffic’ busier areas of a home such as stairs. Due to the different qualities available, there will be a Saxony carpet that can work in any area of your home. Saxony carpets are also recommended for those home with pets as the fibres won't snag on claws.
Loop Pile Carpets
Loop pile carpets are made with yarn loops which are left uncut. Loop pile can be textured or flat, and are often favoured for stairs due to their durability over other carpet types, whilst still remaining comfortable to walk on. Loop pile carpets are a low-maintenance carpet choice that can last for up to 20 years without correct care.
Whilst once primarily used for commercial properties, Loop pile has been redesigned and is used in homes as a sturdy and stylish solution. Loop pile carpets are perfect for family homes, or for particular areas which experience a lot of wear such as playrooms or stairs. Whilst long-lasting, loop pile carpets are not typically recommended for pet friendly homes as claws can cause damage through catching and ripping the pile. Loop pile carpets are perfect for those looking for a long-lasting, quality solution that doesn’t require a lot of maintenance.
Berber carpets can be made from wool, man-made fibres or a mixture of both. They come in level and multi-loop finishes and add design and texture to a home. Due to their finish Berbers easily hide dirt and stains making them a great solution for a number of different rooms.
Berber carpets can be used in pretty much any room of your home from hallway to bedroom. The rustic finish of Berber carpets means it does not show tracks and gives a contemporary, stylish finish.
Unsurprisingly, Cord Carpets are made from cord. Cord carpets offers the perfect solution for those who need to cover floors on a budget. Cord carpets are a thin floor covering and are often seen used in exhibitions and events where a floor needs to be covered quickly. Cord carpets may be of interest to you if you are not looking to spend a lot of money on a carpet, or as a temporary fix until you can have a more expensive carpet fitted.
Cord carpets are suitable for any room in your home and can easily be cut and fit into even the most awkward of areas.
Using natural materials in the home is a trend that has been around for many years. Bringing the outdoors inside is a great way to add some personality and texture to your home. Natural carpets are eco-friendly and perfect for those looking to add a country or rustic look to their home. Natural carpets are available in a number of variations from seagrass, sisal, jute and coir. Coir is made from coconut husk, softened with sea water and dyed. It is a popular Natural carpet choice due to its durability and cost-efficiency.
Since Natural carpets are made with natural fibres they are anti-allergenic making them perfect for those who suffer allergies to certain fibres. They are able to absorb heat and keep a room cooler during warmer days. Natural carpets are also easy to maintain, affordable and suitable for a number of rooms.
Cut & Loop Carpets
Cut and Loop carpets are created in the way the name suggests, some of the fibres are left looped (like a Berber) whilst some are cut to create a pile. Manufacturers are able to cut the loops to create a pattern. Cut and Loop carpets were extremely popular in the 1970s and 80s and has recently seen a resurgence in popularity.
Cut and Loop carpets are perfect for those looking to add personality into a room. The wide range of designs and textures makes them visually interesting and make a great focal point in social rooms, such as a living or dining room. It is recommended that Cut and Loop carpets are used in areas with a lower amount of potential traffic.
